How Are Fairplay Scholars Compared to Similar Groups? (Fairplay Fridays: 2025 Week 5)

Most graphs are boring. They have some numbers in them, maybe a few bars or charts, maybe some pies. Never the good kinds though.

As we prepare the full data for the year, though, we’re happy to share a preview of our graphs and charts which are exciting. Because of what they represent. With the Q3 Newsletter being put together, we will soon be able to share the recent success of our Fairplay Scholars. And while you don’t always hit 100% success, it’s been great to note that this past school year (SY24/25) our support and our Fairplay Scholars have done REALLY well.

Of course, this is a small sample size and it doesn’t happen every year. But it is something to be proud of and shows not only that our program as a whole is improving, but helps to demonstrate the impact made when we provide the right kind of support to our Scholars.

Elementary to High School

This graph shows how many Grade 6 students transition to Grade 7 (High School). While the National Average is very high, the poorest 20% tend to see a large drop-off just in this year alone. Many in the poorest families will note that graduating Elementary is a big achievement and enough literacy for them to begin working already. This is why only 83% of Grade 6 students in the poorest 20% of families will transition to High School (note: the data for the poorest 20% is older as no updated figures were available).

As we put together the data for the past several school years, we are proud to note that every Fairplay Scholar from Grade 6 continued their education in High School. This was true over the last three years as well (we will be sharing the data as batches, including 2017/18-2021/22 and 2022/23-2026/27 and are compiling the data for each).

We put part of this down to improved support, including financial support, as well as families being able to look at older Scholars at the top Colleges and seeing the long-term payoff for education given the success stories they’ve been able to see. `

High School to Senior High School

Similar trends are noted for transitioning from High School to Senior High School. While the National Average is once again unusually high, Fairplay Scholars show a 100% transition rate. That means ALL Fairplay Scholars from Grade 10 last school year are now enrolled in Senior High School this year. Importantly, that’s not just any Senior High School. Most of our Scholars have earned Varsity Scholarships and Academic opportunities to better quality Senior High Schools too. This makes the next step even more likely, as noted below.

Senior High School to College

Once again, all of our Grade 12 students transitioned to College. And once again, that’s not just any College. This year, Scholars went to Quezon City University, PUP, the University of Makati, and other good Colleges. With a mix of good State schools and private institutions offering sports scholarships, this provides

Data wasn’t available to note how many of the poorest 20% of families would go to College. As just 18% of 18-22 year olds from the poorest 20% of families are attending College, we can estimate between 30-60% of Grade 12 students from these families began attending in the first place. Given the high drop out rates from College (over half of College students in Metro Manila will drop out!), disproportionately affecting the poorest families too, we can note that the Fairplay Scholarship drastically increases opportunities for our Fairplay Scholars to note only reach the next level of education but to complete it too (once again, to be share din the full report).

While we continue to attempt to find more specific data, this would also be somewhat consistent with the estimates that 40% of College students in the Philippines will drop out – typically due to financial constraints and a need to earn money.

Once again, the Fairplay Scholarships continue to disproportionately help our Fairplay Scholars complete every level of schooling. While we aren’t perfect – though this school year we hit 100% in these areas, this isn’t likely every year – we are so proud of our Scholars’ hard-work and also their help and support in improving our programs year on year.

While we await the final data – which will include the completion rates of Elementary, Secondary, and Tertiary education for a more long-term look at how effective the Fairplay Scholarship has been – we are super proud that our Fairplay Scholarship has particularly helped students reach much higher levels of education than they could have afforded or worked for previously.

They always had the potential. Your support and our programs helped them tap into it.

So what’s the TL;DR if all this data and information was too much? Well, Fairplay Scholars are about 3 to 5 times more likely to go from Grade School to College, and to complete a College course. Exact numbers will be confirmed in the full Q3 report noting the success of our Fairplay Scholarship program over the past three years.
