March 2021 Update: Gearing up for a Bigger Year

As we steadily ease into this new year everyone at Fairplay, from the Cafe, to the Youth Center and the Sports Center, are all gearing up for a bigger 2021.

Fairplay Cafe: Saturday Buffet

In celebration of the International Women’s Month, our Fairplay Cafe mothers got their plates full as they prepare for a weekly Saturday Buffet! For the entire month of March, our nanays will showcase different delectable vegan dishes for everyone to try.  We’ve opened our doors for anyone who’s interested in our healthier vegan takes on the Filipino classics like Menudo, Sisig, Chicken Curry, Adobo, Lumpiang Shanghai as well as rich desserts like chocolate cake, Biko, banana cookies and more.

Rose Ann and the Youth Center

Meanwhile, the Youth Center continues to support our scholars as they attend their online classes and complete their modules, especially now as they start the second half of the academic year. The Youth Center’s intern manager, Rose Ann, continues to step up as she takes the lead in providing support and care for the kids in the center.

We are very proud to see our scholars soar to greater heights and continue to exhibit excellence. Our very own Coach Rona, who is now in Third Year College taking up a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, made it to the University of Santo Tomas’ Director’s List for the 1st Term of the academic year. More than this recognition, we’re very proud to see her, together with other scholars, share what they’ve learned and their experiences as young leaders in Payatas.

The Payatas Sports Center

Meanwhile, the Payatas Sports Center is also glowing up! Through the help of many of our donors and partners, the tiling, cementing, and painting of the facilities inside the PSC are coming together.

We know everyone is really itching to get back into the field and play football. However, with contact sports still on hold, we have to find other ways to stay fit and keep moving. Because of that, we’re exploring a new sport called TEQball. It is a non-contact sport but is played like football on a special, curved ping pong table. With the help of a local welder, Coach Rona led the creation of our first Payatas TEQBall table. Everyone is excited to try it out as soon as we finalize the schedule for non-contact sports activities.

Payatas FC Comics, Issue 2

Remember Ella? The Payatas FC Comics continues to share the story of Ella as we release its second Issue. This is the proud work of two of our older scholars, Loren Joyce and Jerico, that reflects the stories of many of our kids in Payatas. Check out how the story unravels in this new issue that you can download below.

It was also around March last year that we were pushed beyond our comfort zones and the Philippines went into lockdown. With the tough situation everyone is in, we knew we would have to adapt. Among the many things that we’ve learned from the past 12 months is that, despite the circumstance, we can come out of it better than ever. This year, for whatever is ahead, we know that with the developments of our older scholars and their help and support, we’re able to reach new heights and level the playing field better than ever.
